This past week was Miss Mills' first "official" week in the role of teacher! She had lots of fun in store for the students! Just some of the big ticket items this week were introducing chapter books, using the netbooks to type up Pattern Poems, finishing up inventions, past-present-future social studies fun with Mrs. Lott, a surprise guest reader, a special visit to a first grade class and even a FUNDRAISER Pep Rally!! WHEW!!

Hopefully you heard about some of the fun things we were up to and even found the fundraiser packer in your refrigerator (next to the ketchup) when you got home on Friday! But in case you missed it, here's a look at all that we were up to.

Week 2

I can't believe we are closing in on the end of the second week already!! Don't forget your SPIRIT SHIRT tomorrow :) My family and I are moving to a new house this weekend, so I wanted to get this week's post up before my computer got packed away.

We have worked hard these past few days getting used to new routines, reading our first story - "The Mixed Up Chameleon", refreshing our brains on Fundations, playing with new friends on the playground, exploring the program Graph Club in the computer lab, and even learning a few new fun tricks on the Smartboard. Stay tuned for more on our class' graphing projects - they're going to be great!!

Slowly, Miss Mills will start picking up more and more teaching responsibilities. This week she started with one subject, social studies. She has done a great job teaching the students about diversity by using a number of trade books, group activities and even brought in a guest speaker with some help from Mrs. Vasconcellos across the hall! She is a wonderful addition to our classroom family and we are fortunate to have her.

I can't wait to see everyone at Back-to-School night next Wednesday, September 19!! Here's a teaser question to get your minds thinking... "If you could be any character from Gilligan's Island, which one would you be and why?"

Can they remember what language he speaks?
Or what his house looks like?
Or what their favorite sport is?

Are you a bucket filler or a bucket dipper?
What have you done to fill someone's bucket today?

Creating and extending patterns with Mrs. Lott, our GT teacher

Brainstorming in teams to think of different ways to "Be Respectful"
-one of Henry Clay's school-wide rules-
Students writing down examples of how to "Be Safe"

A Fabulous First Day!

I drove to school this morning with butterflies in my stomach, just like I do every year on the first day, but there was something different about today. Even my husband said to me last night, "This is the most calm I have ever seen you the night before the first day of school!" I'm not sure what brought about this new sense of calm, but it felt great! I couldn't wait to get to school and see my students for their first full day!

As we gathered in the cafeteria, I was happy to see one smiling face after another. It was clear that they were just as excited as I was. There was a subtle chatter as we settled in, got organized, and started getting to know one another. They were enthusiastic but respectful. Energetic but not overwhelming. I dare to say that it was the perfect combination.

Each day of the first week, we will be doing different activities that focus on team building, class building, and character building. Today's focus was on "friendship" - a character trait that plays an important role in a second grade classroom. I read the book "The Rainbow Fish" to the class. It is a sweet story about a fish who is covered in many different colored scales, as well as many desirable shimmering scales. At the beginning of the story, the rainbow fish refuses to share any of his shiny scales and finds himself alone. As he slowly starts giving away his scales one by one, he realizes the joy that can come from sharing.

After finishing the story, we proceeded to discuss what it meant to be a good friend. When I asked the students to think of some words that described a good friend, I was blown away by some of their answers. Kind, loving, respectful, responsible, and honest were just some of their responses. We then created our own rainbow fish. Each one had its own glimmering scale upon which they wrote their favorite describing word for a good friend. The next time you are at school, stop by to see these fish in our hallway display, "A Rainbow of Friendship".

When it came time to pack up and call it a day, the students seemed almost sad that the day was over. They couldn't believe how fast the day had gone. Time flies when you're having fun! I can't wait to do again tomorrow!!

1 day down. 179 to go. It's going to be a GREAT year!!

Open House

After two full weeks of crafting, organizing, cleaning, decorating and all of the other -ings that are involved in getting a classroom ready, we were finally ready for OPEN HOUSE!!

I feel like a kid on Christmas morning on this day. Filled with nerves and excitement, hoping that my students will be just as excited to be in my class as I am to have them.

Here is a peek at how things came together, just in time!! I've got a feeling it's going to be a GREAT year!
